17 Camels and 3 Sons:

Image
17 Camels and 3 Sons: Long ago, there lived an old man with his three sons in a deserted village, located in the vicinity of a desert. He had 17 camels, and they were the main source of his income. He used to rent out camels as a means of shipping in the desert. One day, he passed away. He had left a will, leaving his assets for his three sons. After the funeral and the other obligations were over, the three sons read the will. While their father had divided all the property he had into three equal parts, he had divided the 17 camels in a different way. They were not shared equally among the three as 17 is an odd number and a prime number, which cannot be divided. The old man had stated that the eldest son will own half of the 17 camels, the middle one will get one third of the 17 camels, and the youngest one will get his share of camels as one ninth! All of them were stunned to read the will and questioned each other how to divide the 17 camels as mentioned in the will. It...

Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler

Image
Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler I read GONE WITH THE WIND when I was in 8th grade. I sobbed when the book ended. “Please, please,” I begged my mother, “please tell me that Scarlett somehow manages to win Rhett back.” My mother, ever the cynic, simply shrugged and said, “Oh course she doesn’t. She trashed their relationship, made a mockery of him and of their marriage. He was done with her. He’d never take her back.”   I am such a romantic. My mother’s words came as a crushing blow. How could Scarlett not win Rhett back? Scarlett was a strong, determined woman, and through the entire novel, she was always able to get what she wanted. Rhett Butler was a strong character, too. No wonder the two of them had such difficulties! But through it all, he believed in Scarlett. He immediately recognized and loved her for what she was: a bold beautiful woman, struggling against the confines and dictates of the primping and proper society in which they lived. They were both renegade...

Paolo and Francesca

Image
Paolo and Francesca It seems we could spend the rest of our lives decoding Dante, but will have to be content to contemplate a few isolated fragments. The study of brahmavidya, the Science of the Absolute, provides a key to understanding, and it is very likely that much of what has survived the ages has persisted due to its profundity. If we approach these stories with respect and avoid the modernist disdain for the past, they may yield up their meanings. In reading about hell, it is helpful to translate the term to apara prakriti. The experience of hell only SEEMS eternal. When we're caught in misery, time slows to almost a stop. But "eternal damnation" is nonetheless a temporary condition, correctable by patience and insight.   The story of Francesca and Paolo, culled from the website danteworlds:   “Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta are punished together in hell for their adultery: Francesca was married to Paolo's brother, Gianciotto ("Crippl...

Odysseus and Penelope

Image
Odysseus and Penelope Odysseus (called Ulysses in Latin) was the son of Laertes and was the ruler of the island kingdom of Ithaca. He was one of the most prominent Greek leaders in the Trojan War, and was the hero of Homer's Odyssey. He was known for his cleverness and cunning, and for his eloquence as a speaker. Odysseus was one of the original suitors of Helen of Troy. When Menelaus succeeded in winning Helen's hand in marriage, it was Odysseus who advised him to get the other suitors to swear to defend his marriage rights. However, when Menelaus called on the suitors to help him bring Helen back from Troy, Odysseus was reluctant to make good on his oath. He pretended to have gone mad, plowing his fields and sowing salt instead of grain. Palamedes placed Odysseus' infant son in front of the plow, and Odysseus revealed his sanity when he turned aside to avoid injuring the child. However reluctant he may have been to join the expedition, Odysseus fought heroical...

Napoleon and Josephine

Image
Napoleon and Josephine Napoleon became a general at a very young age and was put in a position of authority where the generals and almost all other officers he commanded were older than him. He felt that this wasn't a satisfactory situation and concluded that if he married a woman older than himself, he might claim to be older than he actually was and thereby obtain a little more respect from his officers. He also wanted to marry a rich, older woman. After the battle of Toulon and after saving the Directory from the Paris mob, Napoleon was invited to a party given by one of the Directors, Paul Barras. In effect, Barras was the next best thing to being king of France at the time. Barras envisioned using Napoleon's military talents for his own political and personal benefit. Barras also had at that time a mistress that he wanted to get rid of (Marie-Josephe-Rose de Beauharnais) because he had decided to take her best friend as his new mistress and couldn't afford ...

Orpheus and Eurydice

Image
Orpheus and Eurydice Orpheus was a a very unusual type of character in the Greek Mythology. While most of the tales were about immortal gods or muscular heroes who built their glories upon killing and conquering, Orpheus appeared to be the most peaceful male character in the whole legend. He was a musician, a mortal human being, who used his 9-string lyre and his amazing music talent as weapons, and actually those turned out to be invincible weapons. It was him, Orpheus, not Heracles, Ulysses (Odysseus) or any other famous heroes, that could tame the vicious Cerberus guarding the gate to the Underworld and defeated the Siren‘s bewitching songs to save the life of the Argo sailors. (Sirens: the mermaids in Greek Mythology that lived on three islands in the sea. They often floated on the water singing the praise of the ocean’s beauty to seduce sailors. Their voice was described to be irresistibly enthralling, and if sailors didn’t cover their ears when passing this area they ...

Paris and Helena

Image
Paris and Helena Mythology and art have gone hand in hand for millennia. One of the greatest thrills for lovers of art is to decipher, interpret and expand the meaning of an image from the symbols and story contained within. Some artists like Hieronymous Bosch and Peter Bruegel bombard the viewer with symbols and demonstrative caricatures by the dozen - others are more subtle. Another aspect of mythology that gives it an enduring appeal is its exploration of prevalent themes about base human passions - which are equally relevant today as when they were inscribed on a clay tablet or carefully inked onto a scroll many centuries ago. Helen of Troy, also known as Helen of Sparta is one of the most famous women in history. Stated to be the most beautiful (mortal) woman in the world she became entangled an affair of the heart which had significant repercussions - the destruction of the famed city of Troy. This is what the mythology states, and whilst Historians and Archaeologists...

Tristan and Isolde

Image
Tristan and Isolde Before now many have told the love story of Tristan and Isolde, but none have done so more faithfully than Thomas, and it is primarily his authentic version that I, Gottfried, follow in presenting to all noble hearts the following tale of love, sacred yet forbidden, healing yet destructive, fulfilling yet frustrating, tyrannical yet benevolent. All with noble hearts will understand. May this tale enhance their minds, enrich their lives, and fortify their love. In Parmenie, a domain in Brittany, there lived a noble lord named Rivalin. Wishing to gain the experience and learning that can only be obtained by foreign travel, Rivalin set sail for the mighty castle Tintagel in Cornwall, where he wished to join the court of King Mark, whose chivalry, polish, and courtly grace were known well beyond his double realm of Cornwall and England. Rivalin participated in a great jousting festival held by King Mark, where he proved himself both a paragon of courtly charm...

Lancelot and Guinevere

Image
Lancelot and Guinevere One of the saddest loves tories is that of Lancelot and Guinevere. One of the greatest knights of the roundtable of King Arthur was Lancelot. He was loyal, wise, strong, and kind. But unfortunately, he fell in love with Queen Guinevere. They tried to keep their love a secret from the king, but eventually, it became known and was a catalyst for the Round Table to fall.  Like most romances, their love bloomed slowly. At first, Guinevere ignored Lancelot. But not for long and she soon succumbed to his charms and they became lovers.   Another knight, Sir Meliagaunt grew suspicious and e confronted Sir Lancelot in the presence of the King and Queen.   This led Lancelot to issue a challenge to Meliagaunt to dispute the charge. But in such a contest, Sir Lancelot became the victor when he cleaved his oponent's head in half. Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere's honour were restored. But rumours continued to abound and several othe...

Cleopatra and Mark Antony

Image
Cleopatra and Mark Antony The story of Cleopatra and Mark Antony has captured people’s minds and imaginations for hundreds of years. It is a tale fraught with drama and sensation, of the exotic Egyptian queen and the powerful Roman general. One of the most powerful retellings of their tragic love affair was by William Shakespeare in the early 1600s. Since then, other authors and even musicians have commemorated them through literature and opera. During the past century, a number of films and television series based around the same story were also produced, showing that over the course of a thousand years, the story has still remained popular. Cleopatra is believed to have been born in 69 BC in Alexandria, Egypt to powerful parents of Greek origin. Her family made up the Ptolemaic dynasty, which ruled Egypt for many years. For a while she ruled Egypt alongside her father and later became the country’s only ruler. Her first political alliance was with the famous Roman general...
